The rainy conditions and seven and a half hour rain delay at the RBC Canadian Open
weren’t a problem for American, Kevin Na.
The 26-year-old tore apart the back nine at Glen Abbey.
His 28 on the nine-hole stretch tied Vijay Singh’s mark set back in 2004 for the lowest nine-hole score in
the Canadian Open. Na hit 15 of 18 fairways and had only 24 putts, good enough to make him the clubhouse leader at nine-under par. (63)
Fellow Americans Joe Durant and Scott Verplank sit two back of the lead with South
African, Retief Goosen, after they fired rounds of 65.
Bryan DeCorso and Chris Baryla lead the pack of 15 Canadian players in the field, as
they sit at 3-under after 15 holes.
Bright’s Grove native, Mike Weir, was in contention early in the round, but stumbled
late. He finished one-under par for the day.
Calgary native, Stephen Ames, was only on the second hole of the course when play
was suspended due to darkness.
Earlier in the week it was announced that Ames would
be a torch bearer for Canada in the 2010 Olympic Games.
With rain expected on and off throughout the weekend, look for the winning score on
Sunday to be around -22. Players will take advantage of the soft conditions and
attack.
I wonder what kind of ridiculous outfit John Daly will be wearing tomorrow? He shot
a miserable round of 77, and failed to take advantage of the ideal scoring
conditions. He qualified for the Open via sponsorship exemption.
Round one will resume this morning at 7:30 am, followed by second round play.
