Another Reilly Rant

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

If you’ve been following the blog for a while… you’ll know that every once in a while I like to direct attention to Rick Reilly’s column on espn.com.

Well it’s time to send you that way again.

After this past weekend’s “Grounded Club Debacle” at the PGA Championship… Reilly has weighed in on some other stupid golf rules.

You can check it out here.

The Return of Tiger… and “Talk Back”!

Friday, April 9th, 2010

If you watched the first round of “The Masters” yesterday… or read the sports section of any paper… you probably know Tiger Woods shot a 68.
That is the best opening round he’s ever had in his career at Augusta.
His reception from the “peanut gallery” (…and a large one at that) was warm… but nothing too extreme… there are obviously some people who still don’t think he’s quite ready for a return to the sport.
I don’t think anybody should be surprised by Tigers play… he’s an athlete who strives under pressure… and has always enjoyed being in the spotlight… and the spotlight for Tiger has never been bigger.
But one thing that does surprise me… is Tiger’s new Nike ad… featuring the voice of his late father Earl.
I won’t go into it too much… but here’s a link to the video… and a poll.
Vote on the poll… and feel free to comment with your thoughts!

Time to “Talk Back”!

SIDE NOTE: Rock 107 Sports Director Jack Miller pointed me towards this link from the Toronto Star… which talks a little bit more about the ad.

Don’t forget to keep checking back… I’ll have UFC picks… and probably something to do with the Blue Jays (2-1 heading into tonight)… while I’m on the morning run tomorrow!!!!!

Inside Source: “News From The Abbey” – Part 2 – “Another Rainy Day”

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Another rainy day at Glen Abbey
American Jerry Kelly holds the lead at a rain-soaked Canadian Open that is in the
second round. He sits at 11-under par with three holes left to play early tomorrow
morning.
Many golfers didn’t even have a chance to hit the course, and haven’t even begun
playing their second round of the tournament due to another weather delay on Friday.
Play was called due to inclement weather just shortly after 4 pm.
Spaniard Camilo Villegas took advantage of the soft conditions, as he finished his
first round early this morning, matching Kevin Na’s score of 63. His momentum
carried over into the second round of the day, as he currently sits one-under par
after five holes, earning him a share of 2nd overall at -10.
Calgary’s Stephen Ames remains the top Canadian in contention. Two chip-ins early
in the second round propelled him up the leaderboard with a score of 7-under par,
four strokes off of the pace set by Jerry Kelly.
Crowd Favourite, Mike Weir, did not see action today and will tee off at 8:10
tomorrow morning. He currently sits at one-under par well back of the leaders. He
will have to go low tomorrow. A round of 65-67 would put him back within striking
distance of the championship.
There is an 80% chance of thunderstorms again tomorrow. The rain is expected to
roll in again around 2 pm, which will hopefully give the players enough time to
finish the second round. The projected cut-line is currently sitting at -2.
Sunday could be a very busy and tiring day. Each player could be expected to play
36 holes and turn the Canadian Open into an endurance test.
Anthony Kim, Retief Goosen, and former Canadian Open champion Scott Verplank, are
the players to watch tomorrow. Look for them to make a charge up the leaderboard.

One More For The Morning….

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Alright… one more for the morning.

I was doing my usual check of  ESPN.com and found yet ANOTHER great article from Rick Reilly.

He thinks Tiger Woods… as good as he is… has a bit of a tantrum problem.

Check this out… and if you’re interested… I’ll post some links to more.

Don’t forget to comment… I’d love a little feedback.

Cheers.

Inside Source: “News From The Abbey” – Part 1 – “Na Problem”

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The rainy conditions and seven and a half hour rain delay at the RBC Canadian Open
weren’t a problem for American, Kevin Na.
The 26-year-old tore apart the back nine at Glen Abbey.

His 28 on the nine-hole stretch tied Vijay Singh’s mark set back in 2004 for the lowest nine-hole score in
the Canadian Open. Na hit 15 of 18 fairways and had only 24 putts, good enough to make him the clubhouse leader at nine-under par. (63)

Fellow Americans Joe Durant and Scott Verplank sit two back of the lead with South
African, Retief Goosen, after they fired rounds of 65.
Bryan DeCorso and Chris Baryla lead the pack of 15 Canadian players in the field, as
they sit at 3-under after 15 holes.
Bright’s Grove native, Mike Weir, was in contention early in the round, but stumbled
late. He finished one-under par for the day.
Calgary native, Stephen Ames, was only on the second hole of the course when play
was suspended due to darkness.

Earlier in the week it was announced that Ames would
be a torch bearer for Canada in the 2010 Olympic Games.
With rain expected on and off throughout the weekend, look for the winning score on
Sunday to be around -22. Players will take advantage of the soft conditions and
attack.

I wonder what kind of ridiculous outfit John Daly will be wearing tomorrow? He shot
a miserable round of 77, and failed to take advantage of the ideal scoring
conditions. He qualified for the Open via sponsorship exemption.

Round one will resume this morning at 7:30 am, followed by second round play.

Inside Source: “News From The Abbey” – Introduction

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Hey Guys

There’s nothing like a good inside source.. an expert if you will… on events that I may not be as “caught up” on. I know pretty much the basics of what’s going on in the sports world… but don’t always have time to follow games, matches, and tournaments as closely as I’d like.

For example.. the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey this week. Since I haven’t been able to watch the tournament as closely as I’d like to… I’ve turned to my first “Inside Source”.

Greg Warren was a classmate of mine in the Sports Journalism program at Loyalist College who has done some work with CBC Sports… and is currently working with the “On The Links Golf Show” out of Peterborough.

Here’s his take on Day 1 of the Tourney.

Fore!

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

The RBC Canadian Open Tee’s off at Glen Abbey in Oakville today and 15 Canadians are in the field… trying to become the first to win since Pat Fletcher did it in 1954.

Once again… the field is lacking some big names… including Tiger Woods… who hasn’t played in this tournament in what seems like forever.

Now… what is it that keeps these players out of the tourney? My thought is the timing. It’s right after the British Open… which means guys are jet-lagged and tired from playing a Major… not to mention usually one of the toughest Major’s of the season.  Nonetheless Mike Weir has to be the favourite Canadian seeing as he’s been in contention to win the last two times the Canadian Open was held at the Abbey.

Anyways… in honour of the Canadian Open starting up today… here’s the PGA’s top Canadian Open Moments.

Stay tuned to the F-Files over the next few days… I’ll try and keep you updated on what’s going on with the leading Canucks in the tourney.

Tiiiiger Where Are You????

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

As the British Open continues this weekend and Tom Watson continues to impress at the “ripe old age” of 59… the fact that Tiger Woods has missed only his 2nd cut at a major in his career… seems to be overshadowed. Granted… he has a bum knee… and let’s be honest… 2 missed cuts doesn’t even come close to the 14 majors he’s won.

But  it hasn’t been all bad for Tiger… recently he won his own tournament… and took the opportunity to talk to himself about it at the post-tourney press conference.

A great golfer… with a great sense of humour.

Speaking of great… and since we’re on the topic of golf… and no doubt a number of you are going through your hockey withdraw…  Alex Ovechkin hit a hole-in-one his first time ever on the course last year… and called out the four-time Masters Champ.

Check this out.

Is there anything this guy can’t do?

Anyways… I”m headed back to the GTA for the night… so I probably won’t have anything ’til tomorrow… be sure to keep checking the F-Files!!!!
