In case you haven’t been following the World Swimming Championships in Rome… which I’ll assume you haven’t… let me fill you in on some of the interesting details coming out of the competition.

Canadian Anna May Pierse set a World Record in the 200m Breast Stroke Semi Finals... and brought home a Silver Medal in the Finals today!!!

29 world records have been set at the meet in the past 5 days… and a lot of people are blaming it on the X-Glide polyurethane swim suits. Michael Phelps (pictured above with his gazillion gold medals)… who hasn’t exactly been performing at his best… refuses to switch suits because of a sponsorship commitment to Speedo.

Swimming’s world governing body FINA had originally said it will ban the new suits… starting in the spring of next year… but NOW they say the ban will take effect January 1st 2010.

Why the switch? Because Phelps’ coach has threatened to pull him from every international competition until the suits are banned.
